WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Dental implants are an option for replacing missing teeth that come with multiple benefits. You get your smile back, and all of the functions of your teeth are restored. Your replacement teeth require much less maintenance and can be cared for just like your natural teeth. One of the biggest benefits of implants is that they help to preserve the strength and integrity of your jawbone. At National Dental Douglaston, we offer several types of dental implants, depending on your specific needs. Before implants can be placed, we first conduct a consultation to determine if you are a candidate.
YOU HAVE LOST TEETH
One of the most obvious criteria to make you eligible for dental implants is that you are missing teeth. Implants are highly customizable and can replace any number of missing teeth, whether it is one tooth or all of them. However, you don’t have to be missing teeth right now. If you need to have a tooth extracted, we can discuss the possibility of replacing it with an implant.
YOUR OVERALL HEALTH IS IN GOOD SHAPE
Getting dental implants requires an invasive surgical procedure. To undergo surgery, you first need to be in overall good health. If you have gum disease, it needs to be treated. If you have certain health conditions, such as diabetes, your ability to heal properly may be compromised. Slowed, or compromised, healing can lead to complications such as infection or implant rejection.
YOU DON’T SMOKE
Smoking affects your whole-body health. It reduces the oxygen levels in your blood and slows your blood flow. Because of this, healing is significantly slowed. Smoking also increases your risk for experiencing dry socket, a condition in which a blood clot comes loose, leaving an open hole for bacteria to enter. To be eligible for implants, you need to be willing to quit smoking for a period before the procedure as well as during the healing process, at the very least. Quitting for good would be the most beneficial.
YOU ARE AN ADULT
Many people think that they are too old to get implants. The truth is, you can never be too old for implants. However, you can be too young. The jaws of children and teens are continually growing, developing and changing. They do so right up until the late teens the to early twenties. Placing an implant in an underdeveloped jaw can stunt its growth, and lead to serious complications. If your child has lost a permanent tooth, but their jaw is still developing, other options will need to be considered first. Implants can be discussed as an option when their jaw is fully developed.
THE CONDITION OF YOUR JAW IS GOOD
For the implants to fuse successfully, and provide strong support for missing teeth, you first must have sufficient bone mass in the jaw. When you lose your teeth, your bone starts to resorb and weaken. The longer you go without replacing your teeth, the weaker your jaw becomes. With a weak jaw, implants can fail. If your jaw is weak, that does not automatically mean you are not a candidate. A bone graft or All-on-4® implants can allow you to enjoy the numerous benefits of dental implants.
