At National Dental Douglaston, we want to be your partner to keep your oral health in optimal form. However, we understand that for some patients, going to the dentist, even for regular cleanings and exams, can be scary. You take care of your teeth at home, brushing and flossing regularly. Even if you are vigilant about these habits though, they often aren’t enough. You can still suffer tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral issues, all of which can worsen over time if not treated. To ease your anxiety, and get the treatment you need, we offer oral and IV sedation.
WHO IS SEDATION FOR?
Whether you’ve had a bad experience with dentists in the past or the sounds of dental instruments make you want to run and hide, anxiety about coming into the office can keep you from getting the treatment you need. Sedation can help calm your nerves for any dental work from a simple cleaning to a surgical procedure. Aside from calming your nerves, sedation can help with several other situations:
- Your teeth are sensitive.
- You have a bad gag reflex.
- You have a low pain threshold.
- Your procedure will take a few hours, or you need to have substantial work done.
- You have trouble sitting still, even for short periods of time.
IV sedation is another type of moderate conscious sedation. Instead of taking the medication by mouth, it is delivered directly into your bloodstream. As a result, it takes effect quite quickly. IV sedation is MD monitored and can be adjusted as needed.
With IV sedation, it is important that you not eat or drink anything (other than water) for at least 8 hours before your appointment. We will insert a needle into either your arm or the back of your hand and administer the medication. It will take effect almost immediately. When your procedure is complete, the medication will be disconnected, and the needle removed. It can take a while for the effects to wear off, so make sure that you have someone with you who can drive you home after your procedure is over.
If you’re anxious about your dental visit or have been putting treatment off out of fear, we want to help. Contact National Dental Douglaston today at (718) 557-9882 to learn how sedation can benefit you.
