It used to be that when you lost your teeth, you would be fit for a set of dentures. While dentures have come a long way, thanks to technological developments, and can restore many of the essential functions of your teeth, they are not an ideal solution for everyone. Today, you have more options. Dental implants have quickly become one of the top solutions to tooth loss. At National Dental Douglaston, we can provide you with your permanent teeth on the same day as your surgery.
Dental implants are unlike any other option available for replacing missing teeth. Where other restorations rely on your gums (dentures) or adjacent teeth (bridges) for support, your replacement teeth rely on surgically implanted rods to support them. They have quickly become the restorative option of choice for both patients and dentists, including National Dental, alike.
The dental implant consists of three basic parts – a titanium rod, an abutment and the crown. Its success depends heavily upon osseointegration or the fusion of your jawbone to the rod. When fusion is successful, the rod imitates the root of a natural tooth and provides a stable support (or even support network when several implants are placed) for your new tooth, or teeth. The implant helps to preserve the integrity of your jaw, keeping it strong and healthy, while the crown on top restores your beautiful smile.
TYPES OF IMPLANTS
Your tooth replacement needs are unique to you. You may be missing only one tooth, or you may be missing a few teeth here and there. Alternatively, perhaps you’re missing an entire arch of teeth. For this reason, there are several different types of dental implants:
- Single tooth implants. Single tooth implants are designed to replace one missing tooth. A single titanium rod supports a single crown.
- Multiple teeth implants: This type of implant is also commonly referred to as an implant supported bridge and is used to replace several consecutive missing teeth (rather than a fixed bridge or partial dentures). The number of implants needed to support your replacement teeth depends on several factors, such as how many teeth are being replaced, and the condition of your jawbone.
- Implant supported dentures: When you are missing a full arch of teeth (or all of your teeth), implant supported dentures may be a possible option. One arch of teeth can be supported on 6 to 8 implants.
- All-on-4 implants: If you have experienced bone loss in your jaw, you may not be a candidate for a typical implant supported a denture. A bone graft is one option, but it requires an invasive surgical procedure, and you have to heal before you undergo implant surgery. All-on-4 implants allow for certain patients to receive implants without undergoing a bone graft first. A full set of replacement teeth is supported on four strategically placed implants.
WHAT IS THE TYPICAL IMPLANT PROCEDURE?
Implants involve surgery. After a local anesthetic, we make incisions in your gums and drill into the jawbone. The titanium rods are set in place, and your gums are stitched closed around the implants, leaving a small portion exposed.
Usually, at this point, you would be given a set of temporary replacement teeth while you heal, so that you regain some of the normal functions of your mouth, but they are not as strong as your permanent restorations. The temporary teeth will stay in place while you heal, which can take several weeks to several months, during which time we see you several times to monitor your progress. Once healed, we place abutments on the implants and take impressions. It then takes another couple of weeks for your teeth to be made. When they are ready, your permanent teeth are placed.
SAME DAY IMPLANTS
With same day implants, the wait time for your permanent replacement teeth is eliminated. Instead, you get your teeth the day your implants are placed. Instead of creating your customized teeth after your jaw has healed from implant surgery, we fabricate it before. This is possible with the help of technology.
We use the ICAT machineto take a 3-dimensional image of your mouth before you undergo implant surgery. The image shows us your jawbone, your existing teeth, and your nerves. The image provides exact 1:1 measurements, which allows us to find the optimal placement of the implants, plan your procedure and design your replacement teeth.
Once your replacement teeth have been designed, they can then be created. They are fabricated based on the exact parameters of your mouth, and to the exact specifications of your situation. They are finished, ready and waiting for you when you arrive for your surgery. Abutments are placed, and your teeth are placed as soon as the procedure is complete.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SAME DAY IMPLANTS?
There are numerous benefits to same day implants. One of the biggest benefits is that the waiting period for your replacement teeth is eliminated. You get to go home after your surgery with your permanent replacements in place. While you still attend periodic visits so that we can monitor your healing, you will have fewer visits overall. Temporary teeth are a thing of the past.
Many of the other benefits of same day implants are similar to those of any other implants. Your replacement teeth are set permanently in place. Unlike dentures, you don’t have to take them out every night to clean them. The only time they ever have to be removed is if they become damaged or need maintenance. Your replacement teeth are meant to last a lifetime.
The biggest advantage of all dental implants is that the titanium rods in your jawbone act just like the roots of your teeth. Your roots do more than holding your teeth in place. They stimulate your jawbone, which sends a message to the rest of your body to send nutrients to keep it healthy and strong. When you lose your teeth, the stimulation stops, and fewer nutrients are sent to your jaw. As a result, your jaw weakens. Your face changes shape, aging you, and remaining teeth shift from their natural position. No other form of tooth replacement can stimulate your jawbone except for dental implants. With implants in place, your jaw can remain healthy and strong.
