Dentures - Complete & Partial

Dentures at National Dental DouglastonYour teeth work exceptionally hard every day, whether or not you know it. They allow you to eat, breaking down your food to start the digestive process. They help you to form certain sounds and words. Tooth loss affects these functions and more. At National Dental Douglaston, we offer several options for replacing missing teeth. One option that we offer to restore your smile is with dentures.

What Causes Tooth Loss?

Tooth loss can be the result of several different factors. One of the biggest causes for tooth loss is advanced gum disease. Once oral bacteria get under your gum line, they can attack your jawbone, along with the periodontal ligaments that hold your teeth in place. When this happens, your teeth become loose and eventually fall out. Other causes of tooth loss include:
•  Smoking: Smoking can increase your risk of developing gum disease and impedes your ability to heal
•  Facial trauma: Being hit in the face can knock out a tooth. This can occur as the result of a car accident, a fall, or a sports injury.
•  Osteoporosis: A condition that affects the strength of your bones
•  Age

Dentures

Dentures have been in use for decades to replace missing teeth. When you think of dentures, though, you probably think of big, bulky fake teeth that are rather noticeable to everyone around you. Thanks to technological developments, dentures are not what they once were. The false teeth are set into an acrylic gum-colored base. Dentures are supported by your gums and held in place by suction. Today's dentures, while still removable, are designed to look more natural and feel more comfortable.

Replacing All of Your Teeth with Complete Dentures

When you have lost an entire arch of teeth or even a whole mouth of teeth, complete dentures can help. If you have any teeth remaining in your mouth that are unhealthy, they must first be extracted to avoid causing serious complications. A mold is taken of your mouth, which is used to fabricate a full arch of replacement teeth.

What About Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are designed to replace sections of missing teeth when you still have healthy teeth remaining (avoiding the need to extract perfectly healthy teeth). Much like complete dentures, they are custom created from molds of your mouth. The acrylic base is supported by your gums. Partial dentures also have metal clasps, which attach to adjacent healthy teeth, to further hold the appliance in place.

Caring for Your Dentures

Dentures require some special care every night. First, you should start by laying down a folded towel on the counter or filling your sink with water (providing a cushion in case of an accident). Remove your dentures and clean them with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture paste. Alternately, you can use soap and water. When finished, set your dentures to soak in a denture cleaning solution overnight. Make sure to brush your gums, any remaining teeth, and all other areas of your mouth) before going to bed. In the morning, rinse your dentures and place them back in your mouth.
