Dental Crowns

posterarrow
Damage and other imperfections in your teeth can quickly turn a beautiful smile into one you try to hide at every moment. Not only can some imperfections dull your smile, but they can also compromise your oral health. At National Dental Douglaston, we can restore both the beauty of your smile and the health of your mouth with dental crowns.

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is essentially a "cap" that sits over your natural tooth, covering the entire visible portion. The crown performs a few essential tasks. It holds a cracked or damaged tooth together, preventing further damage, provides strength, and protects the tooth against bacterial invasion and infections. A crown also provides a way for your compromised tooth to remain in its socket, rather than have the tooth extracted.

Crowns can be made up of a few different materials:
•  Metal: Metal crowns are by far the strongest crowns available. The material is practically indestructible and can last 50 years or more. However, despite their strength, they have one major disadvantage - the color of metal crowns makes them highly noticeable.
•  Porcelain fused to metal: PFM crowns have a metal base with a porcelain exterior. The metal provides strong support for your tooth while the porcelain is meant to mask the metal and make the restoration look more like a natural crown. However, a thin metal line often shows through the porcelain, giving the crown away.
•  Ceramic: Ceramic is the best cosmetic restorative option for your damaged teeth. It is fairly strong, able to withstand normal biting forces. It can also be finished and polished to exactly blend in with the rest of your teeth.

Capping Your Teeth

The process for getting a dental crown takes two visits. During the first visit, we prepare your tooth. This process involves trimming, or removing, some of the enamel from your natural tooth, reducing it in size, and is done under a local anesthetic. This is done so that the crown can fit in perfectly with the rest of your teeth. Once the tooth is trimmed, we take an impression of your mouth, which is sent to our lab. The lab uses the mold to fabricate your crown and can take up to two weeks to be sent back to us.

While waiting for your permanent crown, we will provide you with a temporary one. Once your crown is ready, we check it for fit. If everything looks good, we cement it in place.

Taking Care of Your New Dental Crowns

Taking care of your dental crowns is no different from caring for the rest of your natural teeth. Even though the crown cannot experience decay, it can still collect plaque and bacteria that can lead to gum disease and tooth decay of adjacent teeth. For this reason, brushing and flossing are essential. You should avoid biting down on anything too hard, like ice or your fingernails. Moreover, regular dental cleanings and exams are important for helping to detect damage and ensure that your crown is in good working order.

What are the Benefits of Dental Crowns?

There are several benefits to dental crowns:
•  Providing strength to a weakened tooth
•  Protecting a vulnerable tooth from infection
•  Preventing further damage
•  Sealing a tooth following a root canal
•  Holding a bridge in place
•  Ceramic bridges can be made to perfectly match the rest of your natural teeth
