You do your best to take care of your teeth. But sometimes, accidents happen. And when your teeth suffer damage, they need to be treated right away. Untreated damage, such as chips and cracks, can lead to further damage, as well as an infection inside the affected tooth. At National Dental Douglaston, we can fix damaged teeth, restoring your smile, with crowns.
What is a Dental Crown?A crown is a protective "cap" for a weakened or compromised tooth. It covers the entire visible portion of your tooth, and is designed to hold your tooth together, provide it strength and protect it from bacterial invasion. A crown allows your tooth to stay in its socket, eliminating the need for an extraction.
Crowns can be made out several different materials. Each material has its own unique attributes. Metal crowns, for instance, are the strongest crowns, able to withstand some of the hardest biting and chewing forces. It has been in use for many years. However, metal crowns are easy to see in your mouth, which often makes them undesirable.
Porcelain fused to metal (PFM) crowns are designed to blend in with your teeth. A porcelain exterior covers a metal crown, so you have some of the benefits of metal with a crown that looks more like a natural tooth. With PFM crowns, though, a metal line is often visible through the porcelain, giving them away.
Ceramic crowns are the best aesthetic option. While it is not quite as strong as metal, it can withstand normal everyday use. Ceramic can be made to perfectly match the rest of your teeth as well, and no one will ever be the wiser.
Placing Your Dental CrownGetting your crown starts with preparing your tooth. What this means is that we first need to remove some of the tooth's enamel, reducing its size. This is done so that the crown can properly do its job while fitting comfortably and naturally into the rest of your smile.
Once the tooth is prepared (which is done under a local anesthetic), we then take a mold of your mouth. The mold is used to create your custom crown, a process done in our lab. The tooth can be finished and polished to perfectly match the color of the rest of your natural teeth. It can take up to two weeks for your final crown to be ready, so you will be provided with a temporary crown, which will protect the tooth while you wait. When the tooth is ready, we check it for a proper fit and cement it in place.
