All on 4® Treatment Concept
For decades, the solution of choice for tooth loss was dentures. Today, there are more options. At National Dental Douglaston, we offer dental implants. While implants require a surgical procedure, they have significant benefits over traditional dentures. We have several options for dental implants, including All-on-4®.
What are Dental Implants?Dental implants are small, titanium rods that are placed into your jawbone with a surgical procedure. Implants have quickly become the top tooth replacement option of choice for both patients and dentists, including National Dental. Once in your jaw, the implants act as a tooth root, supporting your replacement teeth.
The All-on-4® Treatment Concept DifferenceTypically, when it comes to dental implants, you need to have sufficient bone mass to support them. When you lose your teeth, your jawbone begins to resorb and weaken, as bone mass is lost. The longer you wait, the more bone mass is lost. Without sufficient bone mass, implants cannot fuse properly and can fail. In many instances, a separate surgery, a bone graft, is required first before you can have implants placed.
All-on-4® implants are different. They are designed for those patients who have experienced bone loss and are not candidates for regular dental implants. Your implants are strategically placed, providing the maximum amount of stability, to avoid the need for a bone graft procedure.
Placing your All-on-4® ImplantsNormally, for a patient with a suitable jawbone, 6 to 8 implants are placed in your jaw and act as a support network to hold your replacement teeth firmly in place. When your jaw is weak, it is less likely that your jaw can successfully hold the implants. Moreover, if one fails, your permanent restorations become compromised.
All-on-4® implants work with only four implants per arch. You may be wondering how fewer implants can provide better stability. It's not the number of implants, but the placement of them. Two implants are placed in the front of your mouth and are inserted vertically. The other two implants are placed at the back of the jaw and are placed at a 45-degree angle.
The surgery is similar to that of any other implant procedure. After a local anesthetic is administered, incisions are made in the gum tissue. Next, we drill into the bone and place the implants, according to your treatment plan. Your gums are stitched closed around the rods, leaving a small section exposed above the tissue.
It can take several weeks to heal from surgery. You will be provided with temporary teeth while you heal, and we will monitor your progress. Once you have healed, abutments are placed on the rods. Impressions are taken, which are used to fabricate your custom replacement teeth. When they are ready, they are affixed to the rods and your smile, along with the functions of your mouth, are restored.
